Reading Goals (B.E.S.T. Standards) - First Grade

These reading goals for your child are based on Florida's B.E.S.T. standards and focus on important skills: foundational reading skills, communication, and building vocabulary. By the end of first grade, your child is expected to master these skills, helping them become confident readers and writers.

Foundational Reading Skills

  1. Print Concepts – Students learn to find important parts of a book, such as the title, author, illustrator, table of contents, and glossary.
  2. Phonological Awareness – Students practice listening and working with sounds in words. They will break down words into sounds (like the beginning, middle, and end), blend sounds to make words, and work with multi-syllable words.
  3. Phonics and Word Analysis – Students learn how letters and sounds match up. They will practice sounding out words using blends (like "bl" in "blue"), digraphs (like "ch" in "chair"), and vowel patterns. They’ll also learn about words with special endings (like "jumped") and longer words.
  4. Fluency – Students work on reading smoothly, accurately, and with expression. They’ll practice recognizing common sight words quickly.

Reading

  • Story Elements – Students will identify and describe the key parts of a story, like the setting, characters, and what happens in order (beginning, middle, and end).
  • Moral of a Story – Students will explain the lesson a story teaches.
  • Point of View – Students will figure out who is telling the story.
  • Reading Informational Text – Students will use features like titles, pictures, and graphs to understand nonfiction texts. They’ll also compare information from pictures and words in the text.
  • Retelling – Students will practice retelling stories or information in their own words, focusing on important details.

Communication

  • Writing – Students will write sentences that are clear and organized. They’ll work on writing stories that have a beginning, middle, and end, sharing their thoughts or facts about a topic.
  • Speaking – Students will practice speaking clearly in complete sentences during presentations, using the right volume.
  • Grammar – Students earn basic grammar rules like capitalizing names, using correct verb tenses, and writing complete sentences with correct punctuation.

Vocabulary

  • Academic Vocabulary – Students will use new words in speaking and writing that are important for understanding lessons and activities.
  • Morphology – Students will learn about base words (like “play”) and how adding endings (like “-ed” to make “played”) changes meaning.
  • Context Clues – Students will use clues from pictures and the rest of the sentence to figure out the meaning of unknown words.
